Second Greatest Impact Award from 100+Women Who Care DeKalb/Sycamore presented to the Camp Power Kishwaukee YMCA Program! $7,200
Following our February 9, 2015 meeting results, our member checks were presented to the Camp Power Kishwaukee YMCA program on Monday, February 23 at the DeKalb City Police Department. Camp Power is a free, collaborative summer program offered on-site to children and families living in the University Village housing development. University Village, located in DeKalb adjacent to the NIU campus along Annie Glidden Road, is a low income housing development. This neighborhood has the highest concentration of poverty, highest police call volume and the highest rate of violent crime occurrences in the city. There are approximately 600 school aged children that reside in University Village.
Camp Power was developed in 2014 in response to the pressing issues facing these children and families. In its inaugural year, this culturally relevant, multidimensional wellness program offered an academic academy, daily nutritious lunch service, structured physical activities, nutrition education, layered mentoring, life skills training, family engagement activities, exposure to a range of community resources, and daily interaction with police officers. A total of 25 different community organizations were involved in the delivery of services, and approximately 500 people volunteered their time to this program. This program employed a combination of University Village parents and NIU students as camp counselors. There were many positive outcomes derived from this program, a few highlights: 3,371 lunches were served to children, 26% reduction in type 2 crimes, 96% of survey respondents indicated an improved perception of police. Our generous donation will allow Camp Power to offer this program in the summer of 2015 and continue to have a positive impact on the lives of many children in our community.

Priority in enrollment is given to children from families referred by social service agencies or from families headed by single parents. A majority of the spaces in the infant/toddler and preschool programs are reserved for low-income or "special needs" children.
